Answers and Explanations

#1 – You can save about __% on commercial property insurance by installing a fire alarm system that reports to authorities?

The correct answer is c, 10-15%.

We’ve called a few commercial property insurance companies in the Cleveland area (Sedmack Insurance and Financial Services in North Olmsted, Ohio, as well as Brian Almond at Farmer’s Insurance in Cleveland, Ohio) and they both claimed 10-15% savings. Certainly there are other variables involved, but more the majority of businesses, 10-15% would be a typical savings.

#2 – True or False – An optical smoke detector is one that detects smoke by using light sensors (infrared LED). When smoke particles pass thru the chamber of the optical detector, it scatters light that triggers the alarm.

The correct answer is True. Explainthatstuff.com has a great article explaining how smoke detectors work using a Tom Cruise/Mission Impossible reference.

#3 – What can a licensed Fire Alarm Technician do with fire alarms?

The correct answer is H, all of the above. Here is the certification requirements for fire alarm systems by NICET.

#4 – True or False – A red or blue tag is usually used on a fire alarm system that does not meet applicable codes and standards.

The correct answer is False. According to the Texas Fire Alarm Practice Exam,  a yellow label should be used if a system does not meet applicable codes and standards.

#5 – Single conductors shall not be smaller than __ A.W.G.

The correct answer is 18 A.W.G. NFPA 760.142 states that single conductors shall not be smaller than 18 A.W.G. Also, the Texas Fire Alarm Practice Exam has the same question on it, which states that the answer is 18.
